Vossy is talking up the Lion's chances for a premiership either this year or next and to be honest if they keep playing the way they have been I don't see them getting beaten a lot. The upcoming game in Round 12 against the Bulldogs will be the first real test against a top 4 time since they hit their stride and started putting back to back wins together. Vossy is right the current strategy is all very much about staying in touch for September and if fortune and hard paly favours a top 4 spot. Adelaide looks vulnerable and I can only see the Lions or the 'Pies getting a shot in for that position. Sydney is an outside chance but are far too mecurial to be a sure thing.
Vossy for the Gold Coast gig!
I'm still not sure how I feel about it to be honest. Michael Voss is obviously passionate, ambitious and has a heap of desire, but the general question is does that compensate for a lack of assistant coaching experience? Rohan Connaly from The Age explores the question with some considerable thought but the answer still seems to be - who knows? It's one of the great questions of football at the moment.
Goose praise! And yes he was mercurial. I had to slap Nigey Nige after he started to overbag The Goose, who of course did some silly things (including kicking three behinds) but did some amazing work at ground level and in the air. Nige I'll take your Goose badge if you can't wear it!
Oh what a night! No match report because to be frank, the journos do it better. But it was a fantastic game. The tug of war of the first two quarters. The heartbreak of being down at the end of the third. The final quarter fight back and snatching that final goal. It was a nail-biting finish and it was truly wonderful to watch the Collingwood cheer squad just get quieter and quieter as the Lions just rolled over them in that final quarter. The Lions' midfield was awesome after a third quarter slump and the back line was tenacious and rebounded quickly.
We had a great time amongst the unwashed fans of Collingwood. There is no atmosphere like a Brisbane - Collingwood game at the Gabba. There is a fierce rivalry between the two sides and their fans, and it showed when one brave chap in his maroon, gold and blue rain poncho went and had a few words with the head of the Collingwood Cheer Squad and his mates after Brisbane had won the game. He had a crowd watching his back and Joffa knew it.
An interesting perspective from Michael Voss on the mental hold that the Lions have over the Pies since 2003. Also a great example on why footballers should get a little more training as writers - way to labour that analogy Vossy. I particularly love:
Despite personnel changes on both sides, the scars run deep when it comes to the colour of the Lion, like the wildebeest that is on high alert whenever the Lions are around, watching over its shoulder in case of a surprise attack.
Special stuff from the legend.
Well I thought it was risky trading Wood and relying on McDonald but I thought the champion ruckman would have another couple of seasons in him. Looks like I was wrong. But then so was Leigh Matthews so I'm in good company. McDonald has announced his retirement citing recurring injury and being old. So if Charmain gets injured (possible) or biffs someone (likely) or gets run down by Nigey Nige and Felis on the way to the hospital (a remote but definite possibility) we are leaning on Luenberger and this other young kiddie. Gulp.
