Vossy is talking up the Lion's chances for a premiership either this year or next and to be honest if they keep playing the way they have been I don't see them getting beaten a lot. The upcoming game in Round 12 against the Bulldogs will be the first real test against a top 4 time since they hit their stride and started putting back to back wins together. Vossy is right the current strategy is all very much about staying in touch for September and if fortune and hard paly favours a top 4 spot. Adelaide looks vulnerable and I can only see the Lions or the 'Pies getting a shot in for that position. Sydney is an outside chance but are far too mecurial to be a sure thing.
Vossy for the Gold Coast gig!
I'm still not sure how I feel about it to be honest. Michael Voss is obviously passionate, ambitious and has a heap of desire, but the general question is does that compensate for a lack of assistant coaching experience? Rohan Connaly from The Age explores the question with some considerable thought but the answer still seems to be - who knows? It's one of the great questions of football at the moment.
I 'watched' this game. Which really meant I spent time in front of a very dull game of footy reading World War Z, playing with the kids and talking to Min. Poor old Ds. They just seem to be completely and utterly incapable of sustaining effort if they get behind. Its surprising because on paper everyone says they have a decent list but it is like they can't even be bothered trying. Like the old joke about Italian tanks they have one gear in forward and four in reverse. Sigh.
Well the Doggies look a chance this year and should improve on last years bottom four finish. They'll have to remain consistent throughout the year and stay fit.
Geelong 15.15 (105) Port Adelaide 14.12 (96)
OK I'll be honest. Between the Tigers/Blues game, my general dislike of Seven's football coverage (I can't put my finger on ot but Ten just seems slicker) and my PSP I wasn't really paying a lot of attention to this game and don't have much to say about it other than I am awed by both the Cats' continuing power and Port's ability to fight back when they seemed flogged at 1/2 time (by when I had lost interest).
I've also noted my general indifference to Geelong now that they have won a flag. Yay for them! Now they are just the team to beat. People must have felt about Brisbane like this in 2002. Until we faced Collingwood in the Grand Final and all of a sudden most of the football world was barracking for us again.
Round 1
Well footy time is here and I for one have been feasting on the television coverage like a fat toddler who cracks the Easter egg stash before his parents wake up. That amounts to two and a half games and part of another if I can sneak it in this arvo. I'm assuming there is a game on Monday as well, so that could be a fifth. Ahh footy!
So I thought I'd sum up what I'd seen this weekend thus far before I'm so bloated on the game that I can't type more than "great weekend of footy" over and over again.
Richmond (109) Vs Carlton (79)
All up a pretty ordinary game. It was pretty obvious that these were last years bottom two teams and apart from some bright spots in the forwards for Richmond and the promise of Jes..., sorry, Chris Judd for Carlton both teams looked like they were on track for finals football in 2011. Maybe. If they aren't eaten away by declining memberships and mounting debts beforehand. The latter is probably unlikely because the most remarkable thing about the season opener at the MCG was the crowd of 73 000+ to see the wooden spooners and the almost wooden spooners battle it out.
In fairness it was a free flowing if error prone game. Richo really stepped up for the Tigers and there were some sterling efforts form Kane Johnson (26 disposals ) and Kayne Pettiffer (15 kicks, 20 disposals, 1 goal). Nathan Brown, after a slow start, showed some form and if he can fire he'll do well once again for the Tige's. But really, like another team I know, the Tigers are all about getting the ball to a power forward, in this case Richo who bagged 5 goals and laid the foundations for victory against an inconsistent Carlton.
Carlton seemed to play OK when they decided to apply themselves but overall the Chris Judd showcase team fell over in the final quarters. In my mind they should have dropped Fevola like a stone last year during his form slump because you can crash and fly through as many packs as you like; try and take as many speccies as you like; if you can't mark the ball and then kick it through the goals you are a useless full forward. Add being a boozer and a dickhead and I'm really surprised the Blues have stuck with the Fev for as long as they have. Carlton pretty much have no one to deliver to and it shows.
The sad thing about all the attention paid to the Fev and Tom C...., sorry, Chris Judd, is that it took the attention away from some pretty strong performances by members of Carlton's midfield and half forward line. Bret Thornton had a great game with 28 disposals (24 of them kicks) as did Andrew Carrazzo (25 disposals) who tried his guts out in the second half and Kade Simpson (23 disposals). It may be an indication of his prominence in the team now, but given he was off for half a game, Ron Bara..., sorry, Chris Judd managed to get a lot of the ball for his game time and used it effectively (22 disposals). It was just a shame it was all heading towards Fevola.

I'd been wondering what the Lions were going to do with their surfeit of ruckman. Both Cameron Wood and Beau McDonald have been mentioned as possible trades.
Well it looks like the Pies are sniffing around Wood but the language is very coy between the two clubs. Given there is a carefully crafted rivalry between the two (and its well deserved - fucking Collingwood!) I imagine any player trade is always handled with studied indifference. Check the article below.
Nigey Nige, Felis and I were there for this little bit of hijinks and we managed to have a ghood view of the aftermath as the cops picked up the girls clothes and friends. The crowd loved the moment, especially after Corey Enright from Geelong had previously had his pants torn of him in a Michael Riscatelli tackle and continued to play (even taking a kick) before the trainer could get some new white dacks.
I'm glad the sentence was light and the girls aren't paying too much for their hijinks.
