High school. My first 'alternative album'. Made me realise there was more to the world than Dire Straits and FM104.
2. Stoneage Romeos - The Hoodoo Gurus
Just outta school (1988). In love with a girl called Tracey who didn't love me no more. This tapped into my growing love of 60s music and gave it a playful Australian twist.
(1989) I only had a taped copy of this for years but even more than Never Mind the Bollocks (which I dearly love) changed my view on what punk and music should be. In many ways this, PIL's most accessible album paved the way for their odder stuff which paved the way for much of my interest in indie rock in the 90s.
4. Check your head - The Beastie Boys
(Sometime in the mid 90s) Grunge was happenning and I loved it. But then my mates started playing this rap crap and I was entranced. Very soon many prejudices against black urban music were dropped and I leapt into rap and hip-hop. It took this seminal piece of brilliance from thos New York wise guys to get me there.
5. The Mysterious Tale of How I Shouted One Eyed Jesus - Jim White
(late 90s maybe early 2000s) My introduction to this album was an odd SMS from Jonatron. He had dsicovered this new album and it was wonderful! I'd always been dubious about country but this alt-country melancholia opened up and entire genre of music and all of a sudden Johnny Cash, Hank Williams and Lee Hazelwood were cool.
